PUSHING PROGRESSION + HONORING THE PAST
Snow Summit | March 21-22
Celebrate snowboarding’s early days at the first-ever Full Circle – March 21-22 at Snow Summit*. The 2-day event will honor the past while pushing the progression of the sport, by enlisting the talents of action sports legends Rob Machado and Dave Downing to rebuild SoCal’s first in-ground halfpipe and design a unique course that incorporates the best aspects of 90s snowboarding and crossover elements from Southern California’s iconic surf and skate scenes.
*Valid lift ticket or season pass required for all on-hill activities.
When Tom Sims took his passion for surfing and skateboarding to the slopes in the 80s with a homemade skiboard the snowboarding revolution was born – fueled by personal expression and a burgeoning sense of community. Full Circle seeks to evoke the spirit of those early days by revisiting the concepts that helped propel snowboarding to the top of the winter sports hierarchy – creativity, utilizing natural terrain, accessible features for all abilities, and emphasizing camaraderie over competition – and launch the 90s terrain park progression.
Big Bear Mountain Resort has been at the forefront of snowboarding’s progression for over 30 years, building Southern California’s first in-ground halfpipe at Snow Summit in 1988 and North America’s first terrain park at Bear Mountain in 1992 (Outlaw).
Inspired by Tom Sims’ original design, Rob and Dave will work with our award-winning Park Staff to restore the in-ground pipe at the top of Chair 6 to its former glory while putting their own touches on the layout to create a course that is both accessible and inspirational.
After a 2-day closed photo/video shoot, the course will be open to the public March 21-22. Guests can experience Rob and Dave’s vision and enter to win $5,000 and a 2020/21 season pass by submitting a :30 GoPro edit of their best run through the course, with the winner announced on April 1.

One of the most influential snowboarders of his era, Dave Downing was a pro rider for Burton in the early and mid-90s who became an industry icon for his well-rounded style and adventurous personality – from shredding park and pipe, to back country and mixing in some surfing when his schedule allowed.
Since retiring from the pro snowboarder ranks, Dave has remained an ambassador for Burton, leading the company’s retail and grass roots marketing efforts, as well as Channel Island Surfboards, and is married to fellow pro rider Shannon Downing (formerly Dunn).
