Bear Mountain Base Area Renovation Complete
$5M UPGRADE IS PHASE 1 OF 2-YEAR RENOVATION PROJECT
The 2019/20 winter season at Big Bear Mountain Resort (BBMR) has been noteworthy on multiple fronts, with record-setting opening days, a brand new BBMR commercial, and the completion of a $5 million renovation project at Bear Mountain, which began in summer 2019, and includes doubling the size of the iconic sun deck, installing multiple fire pits, and upgrading the ticket plaza area to improve guest flow and ADA access.
The improvements were completed on Dec. 20 and marked the first phase of a two-part renovation plan for the Bear Mountain base area, with the second phase to begin after the 19/20 winter season ends.

West Plaza Entry
As the primary entrance/exit point for most guests, the West Plaza entry area is one of the busiest areas of the Bear Mountain base area. To improve guest flow in this high traffic zone the Repair Shop was relocated allowing the stairs leading to the lifts and sun deck to be expanded with improved ADA access ramps. Additional lighting, as well as new pavers and awnings, was installed giving guests better sightlines and easier access to the slopes.
In addition to improved ramp access in the West Plaza area, new accessibility paths were built to improve ADA guests’ access to all areas of Bear Mountain.
Sun Deck Expansion
Bear Mountain's famous sun deck is the perfect place to prep for first chair, check out the action in The Scene, or relive your day on the slopes with friends and favorite beverage. Following the Bear Mountain mantra of “go big or go home”, the deck was expanded from 13,000 square feet to over 25,000 square feet, giving guests even more opportunity to enjoy one of the industry’s best après scenes. The new deck spans over 350 feet, making it larger than a football field, with custom-built bench seating along the entire slope edge.
New Fire Pits & Furniture
The sun deck expansion also includes 3 new fire pits and $250,000 of new furniture – approximately 245 pieces – including couches, so guests can grab a cup of Huski hot chocolate and get cozy!
Upgraded Dining Location
Check out the new dining location at the west end of the sun deck, Goldmine Cheesesteak Co., featuring a made-to-order menu that gives guests even more options and reduces wait times so there’s more time to enjoy the slopes.
